Starting out - any advice?

Hello,

I'm not really sure if anyone can provide advice here. I am very lucky to have some land available to me, but I have no idea how to get started with an enterprise (horticulture is what I'm interested in, but also, I don't live on site, so wouldn't be able to provide 24/7 care for animals). I'm not scared of work, but I'm terrified of putting everything into it, and it being a flop! I'd have absolutely no idea where to start with commercialising, or even what crop mix etc. to start with. I work full time in an office and as much as I try to be enthusiastic I just can't, the only joy I get in work is being out on the farm. I have no desire to be rich, I'd just like to be comfortable and make the most of the great opportunity I have.

I think what I want is someone to give me a timeline of exactly what to do, when, what to grow, who to approach to sell... a business plan I suppose! Is it possible to make any living growing these days? If so, how have you done it?

The idea of share-farming seems great; someone who has experience, but doesn't have land, could join in a partnership, and we could work together (I have the green cert, and grow small amounts, but never on a large scale). The problem there is that there is no business in place at the moment, so there would be likely very little to no money available to pay themselves their well deserved salary for a year or two, until the business got off the ground.

So, should I stick to the office job?
