Organic Growers Proving a Good Livelihood is Possible Balancing Intensive Production with Space for Nature – New Ambassadors Jenny Watkins and Janet Power
Carlow organic growers and new Farming for Nature Ambassadors, Jenny Watkins and Janet Power of Gorse Farm will be taking part in a live online “Ask the Farmer” Q&A on Tuesday, 17th February, sharing their experiences running a small organic farm while putting nature and producing nutrient-dense food for their community at the heart of their operations.
Organic Growers Proving a Good Livelihood is Possible Balancing Intensive Production with Space for Nature
Deerpark, Carlow – Janet and Jenny started their 3-acre certified organic farm in 2016 on a hillside looking up at Mt. Leinster. Since then, their market garden has grown to supply fresh, nutrient-dense vegetables to supermarkets and local restaurants across Carlow and Wexford. Alongside producing high-quality food, they have planted thousands of trees, established hedgerows and shelter belts, and allowed areas of the farm to rewild, creating habitats for birds, hares, and other wildlife.
They focus on high-value crops like salads and leafy greens. Their current operations include a variety of outdoor beds totalling over 1.5 acres for production. They transitioned to a no-dig approach in 2019. After addressing challenges with nutrient levels and soil health, they modified their methods to minimize soil disturbance while maximizing fertility through innovative use of pony manure and waste materials, producing 80% of their own nutrient needs.
They have successfully maintained the farm as their primary income source for nearly ten years. They have recently planted a syntropic agroforest and are excited to see it develop. Their vision includes expanding their orchard and hedgerows, establishing a farm shop, and teaching courses. They have observed a remarkable return of wildlife, emphasizing their philosophy that “nature is front and centre in everything we do.”
They are taking part in an upcoming online Q&A, as part of a Farming for Nature initiative to provide farmers and growers ideas and inspiration about how they can include nature-friendly practices on their farm. Viewers will have the chance to ask Janet and Jenny about their nature-centred approach to farming, their no-dig techniques, and how they manage to produce nutrient-rich food while enhancing biodiversity.
Thomas O’Connor, a Farming for Nature Ambassador who nominated Janet and Jenny for ambassador status, commented: “They’re an inspiration to the local community, building a thriving farm that works with nature and actively sharing their knowledge. This online Q&A is a perfect way for people to hear directly from them.”
