Jack Browne, a third-generation farmer from Co. Carlow, is blazing a trail for sustainable, nature-friendly tillage farming in Ireland. Since taking over his family’s 40-hectare (100-acre) farm in 2020, Jack has transitioned to a certified organic, regenerative farming system that integrates agroforestry, permaculture, and low-input tillage.

Jack is now inviting the public to an interactive online “Ask the Farmer” Q&A on July 15th to discuss his experience with silvoarable farming, an innovative approach that combines trees with arable crops to improve biodiversity and soil health.

A Leader in Agroforestry and Organic Tillage

Through a European Innovation Partnership (EIP) project with Trees On The Land, Jack transformed a 27-hectare field into a demonstration site for silvoarable systems—a first-of-its-kind agroforestry initiative in Ireland. His design includes:

  • Over 3,000 trees integrated into crop alleys
  • A mix of fruit, nut, and native tree species (walnut, hazel, sweet chestnut, apple, plum, elder)
  • A focus on soil regeneration, cover cropping, and minimal tillage

His guiding philosophy? “Low input, premium output” — prioritizing long-term sustainability over short-term profits.

“At this stage of my life I was willing to let the farm be less profitable in the hope I could figure out a system that will be sustainable.”

Biodiversity & Climate Resilience

Jack has also committed 3 hectares (7 acres) to native woodland, including oak, birch, alder, and Scots pine. His rewilding efforts have led to:

  • A surge in wildlife, including buzzards, kestrels, and owls
  • Year-round greenery from diverse perennial plantings
  • A farm that is now a living, breathing ecosystem

“I didn’t want to memorise the names of pesticides. I wanted my head filled with information about trees and plants instead.”

Recognised for Excellence: Farming for Nature Ambassador

Jack was nominated by Stephen Meredith of the Irish Organic Association and awarded the Farming for Nature Ambassador Award, joining a network of Irish farmers working at the intersection of agriculture and ecological stewardship.

“Seeing other Irish farmers trying new things gave me the confidence to take a different path. It’s inspiring to be part of a network doing so much good.”

Sharing Knowledge with the Farming Community

Alongside managing his own farm, Jack:

  • Hosts on-farm walks and workshop and acts as a role model for young farmers looking to adapt to climate and market challenges

“I understand the difficulties of moving away from mainstream agriculture. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it.”
