Farming for Nature is delighted to welcome Margaret Edgill of Mount Briscoe Farm, Co. Offaly, as our September Ambassador.
A seventh-generation farmer, Margaret has transformed her 46-hectare family farm near Daingean into a wonderful example of how farming, nature and rural enterprise can thrive side by side. The farm has been certified organic since 1998 and combines organic suckler beef production with forestry, traditional orchards, diverse habitats and a growing range of farm-based enterprises.
Margaret’s approach to farming is deeply rooted in caring for the land. She uses rotational grazing with her herd of Irish Moiled, Shorthorn and other cattle, while managing a rich mosaic of grassland, woodland, hedgerows, wildflower areas, a heritage orchard and a restored walled garden. Ancient beech trees, native woodland and carefully managed hedgerows provide valuable habitat for wildlife, with barn owls, bats, woodpeckers and pollinators among the species benefiting from the farm’s nature-rich landscape.
Margaret has also undertaken significant habitat work, including laying 480 metres of hedgerow, coppicing, replanting and native tree planting. She is continuing to explore new ways of enhancing biodiversity, including plans for biodiversity-rich ponds and agroforestry.
But for Margaret, farming for nature is also about connecting people with the land. Since taking over the farm, she has developed glamping and self-catering accommodation, hosts farm-based events and an annual Farm to Fork dining experience, and produces artisan preserves using fruit and other ingredients grown or foraged on the farm. Her philosophy of “being of that place and eating of that place” captures her belief in a truly local and sustainable food system.
Through her work, Margaret is demonstrating that diversification can strengthen both a farm business and its connection with nature. She also welcomes students and visitors to Mount Briscoe, sharing knowledge of organic farming, biodiversity, traditional skills and nature-friendly farming.
