SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Bryan & Gail Daniels: Putting Sustainability at the heart of a Conventional Dairy Farm
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, Bryan and Gail have been ahead of the curve on sustainable dairy production integrating LESS and a strategic breeding plan to boost milks solids production. As well as that\, Bryan is a Nuffield scholar in the area of integrating clover into grass swards with a keen interest in nature and habitat creation on farm. Recently they’ve pushed their co-op to produce a dairy nut that doesn’t include soy.  \n\n\n\nTo learn more on their various strategies for farming for nature\, join us on their farm walk.https://www.youtube.com/embed/bNCpc8ZS-nE \n\n\n\nAre you starting out on your nature-friendly farming journey and don’t know where to start? Apply to the Horse’s Mouth Mentorship Scheme and get specific advice for your farm from a fellow farmer. For more info https://www.farmingfornature.ie/your-farm/advice/the-horses-mouth/ \n\n\n\nWHAT ARE THE FARM WALKS: \n\n\n\n\nThis will be a 2.5 hour (approx.) visit to the farm and will include a walk around with the farmer\, a look at some of the habitats/species\, as well as the livestock and/or crops. Feel free to engage with the farmer about how they manage the land in support of nature.\n\n\n\nThese walks are for farmers and people with an interest in farming for nature. They are meant to be an interactive knowledge exchange. They are not suitable for children\, or for people/groups looking for an ‘organised walk’ in the countryside.\n\n\n\nThese walks are non-profit but a booking fee is necessary to minimise no-shows. It costs €12 to register and all funds are circulated back into the farming community.\n\n\n\nPlease wear suitable footwear for uneven and potentially muddy conditions.\n\n\n\nDogs are not welcome. You will be turned away if you arrive with one. We would ask that you please respect these farmers\, their land and livestock when visiting. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive at least 10 minutes before the walk commences.\n\n\n\n\nThank you to the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of Agriculture\, Food and the Marine for supporting these farm walks. \n\n\n\nFor more info on FFN events\, resources\, programmes – go to www.farmingfornature.ie

SUMMARY:'Ask the Farmer' Online Q&A with Nigel Gillis - ''Building resilient crops using conservation biology principles'
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Gillis operates a stockless conventional tillage farm in Grangecon\, Co Wicklow. Previously following a prescriptive approach\, he has transitioned his 73 hectares (180 ac) to using principles of conservation agriculture in the last 8 years. After noticing more and more pests and diseases and their chemical cures eating away at his margin\, he became disillusioned and wanted to try something else. After running into a member of BASE Ireland\, he became thirsty for knowledge. After learning that ‘every target species killed with insecticide kills 1700 non-target and potentially beneficial others\, as well as building insecticide resistance’\, he immediately ceased its use. He has followed that by not using rodenticide in the last three years\, herbicide use is down by 20% and has reduced nitrogen use by 60% and consequently getting away without using fungicide some years. More recently he has started his journey to organic conversion. He produces resilient crops of barley\, wheat\, beans and oats by using biological dressings on home saved seed\, specific soil sampling to monitor micronutrients and biological stimulants. This approach has meant he is ‘a hell of a lot happier with what he’s doing\, and the birds are back!’ Apex predators such as buzzards and kestrels\, have returned to the farm along with the Barn owl. Nigel leaves 20% of his farm as space for nature and doesn’t manage the internal hedgerows\, some of which are the old style ‘double ditch’. Testament to this respect for habitat\, Birdwatch Ireland have recorded 32 species in one hour on the land.
