SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Ken Gill
DESCRIPTION:Ken Gill is an organic beef and tillage farmer near Edenderry Co. Offaly. He keeps around 60-70 suckler cows and finishes animals at 2 years\, which are all completely grass-fed. Prior to 2015\, he was farming conventionally but struggling to make it work financially. He tried organics and has been impressed with the results ‘’The grazing ground gets very little fertiliser\, it’s amazing. Soil tests a few years after going organic showed P & K levels had improved rather than declined’. He has been carefully managing soil fertility since\, ensuring no ground is left bare and catching and using effluent that runs off the yard. In his rotation\, he produces turnip\, kale and rape for fodder\, which also has the benefit of breaking up the soil for subsequent crops. He produces around 8 hectares (20 ac) of oats for Flahavan’s\, and then introduces red clover for fertility. \n\n\n\nHe is a part of the Teagasc Future Beef group. In 2023\, group members reported very poor grass growth. In contrast\, he notes in ‘our system the weather didn’t make much difference\, it was more resilient compared to the other Future Beef farmers – the financial figures are more than holding their own’. He used to keep a ‘short\, back and sides’ approach to hedgerow management but now lets them grow. He has observed how the hedge provides a shelter not just for cattle but for grass too ‘you can see it after a cold east wind for a couple of weeks\, there is a big difference between the exposed field and the sheltered fields.’ This is just one example on his farm of ‘how helping nature helps your bottom line too’.

SUMMARY:'Managing a wide variety of habitats on a productive sheep and tillage farm' with Ambassador Boyd Bryce
DESCRIPTION:Join this farm walk on practical actions for nature with Farming for Nature Ambassador Boyd Bryce ‘Managing a wide variety of habitats on a productive sheep and tillage farm’. The Farming for Nature  farm walks are an opportunity for FFN Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. This is part of our ‘Shared Island’ series of farm walks\, in partnership with the Nature Friendly Farming Network and we encourage farmers from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to attend. \n\n\n\nBoyd and his wife Bride run a 350-acre farm on Inch Island\, Co. Donegal. The farm is a mix of arable areas\, sheep pastures and woodland\, all of which is managed sensitively for nature. Boyd farms his land with nature and manages all aspects of the farm with nature in mind\, including his shorelines\, wetlands\, woodlands\, field boundaries and non-farmed areas. Boyd also actively creates new habitats for wildlife ranging from waders to amphibians. He is a passionate birder and has been involved in various bird-based projects over the years. Boyd is also enthusiastic about educating others and his farm has been used as an example of best practice for conservation farming. \n\n\n\nWHAT ARE THE FARM WALKS: \n\n\n\n\nThis will be a 2.5 hour (approximately) visit to the farm and will include a walk around with the farmer/farm family\, a look at some of the habitats and species present\, as well as the livestock and/or crops\, and a discussion with the farmer about how he/she/they manage the land in support of nature.\n\n\n\nThese walks are for farmers and people with an interest in farming for nature. They are meant to be an interactive knowledge exchange between people with a real interest in farming and nature. They are not suitable for children\, or for people/groups looking for an ‘organised walk’ in the countryside.\n\n\n\nThese walks are non-profit but a booking fee is necessary to minimise the frustrating level of no-shows. It costs €12 to register and all funds are circulated back into the farming community.\n\n\n\nPlease wear suitable footwear for uneven and potentially muddy conditions.\n\n\n\nWe would ask that you please respect these farmers\, their land and livestock when visiting. Dogs are not welcome. You will be turned away if you arrive with one.\n\n\n\nThe exact location of the farm walk will be sent via email to ticket holders on the week of the walk (keep an eye on your email & your spam folder as sometimes the emails end up in spam).\n\n\n\nPlease arrive at least 10 minutes before the walk commences.\n\n\n\n\nThank you to the Shared Island Civic Society Fund for supporting these farm walks. For more info on FFN events\, resources\, programmes – go to www.farmingfornature.ie

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Dairy Farmers Bryan & Gail Daniels
DESCRIPTION:Bryan & Gail will be taking part in an online webinar for Farming for Nature \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKilkenny Dairy Farmers Who Took Stand Against Soy and Palm Based Feed Imports – New Farming for Nature Ambassadors \n\n\n\nBryan and Gail Daniels\, a husband and wife farming duo\, are transforming traditional dairy farming practices in Co. Kilkenny into a model of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Farming 157 hectares (388 acres) in the scenic south Kilkenny hills\, the Daniels family is committed to not only producing high-quality milk but also nurturing their land for future generations. \n\n\n\nAdopting a conventional spring calving dairy system with a focus on animal and soil welfare\, the Daniels’ operation includes 272 cows. Faced with  milk quota limitations when starting out\, Bryan and Gail pivoted their strategy to produce the cheapest litre of milk possible with the added benefit that this was helping the environment. \n\n\n\nSince 2003\, the Daniels have championed the use of clover to reduce reliance on artificial chemical fertilizers. Their innovative practices include: \n\n\n\nReduced Synthetic Nitrogen Use: Over 50% reduction\, from 220kg/ha\, has been achieved by incorporating clover into their pastures. Use of Protected Urea: Implemented for the last 8 years\, showcasing their commitment to minimizing emissions. Selective Dry Cow Therapy: Employed since 2012 for improved animal welfare and production quality. \n\n\n\nThe Daniels take pride in their strategic breeding program\, ensuring they only breed  from cows free from lameness\, high cell counts\, or poor temperament. This dedication has resulted in a commendable somatic cell count of just 73\, alongside a yield of 5\,422 liters of milk per cow with 4.35% fat and 3.71% protein. \n\n\n\nReflecting their commitment to sustainable practices\, Bryan insists on sourcing soy and palm-free feed and has eliminated chemical sprays for dock leaves since 2003. A significant portion of their farm has been kept completely chemical nitrogen-free in recent years. \n\n\n\nThe family’s connection to the land runs deep\, as Bryan is the fifth generation to manage the farm\, fostering a long-standing tradition of farming in harmony with nature. Their ongoing initiatives include Creating Habitats: From installing owl boxes and planting native trees to constructing ponds for aquatic species. Environmental Schemes Participation: Actively involved since 1997\, they promote biodiversity by maintaining traditional hay meadows and engaging in hedge-laying each year. \n\n\n\nGail’s venture into soap-making from their farm’s milk diversifies their business\, demonstrating their innovative spirit. The couple actively prioritizes human sustainability\, implementing practices that allow for work-life balance\, such as installing a 44-point rotary parlour in 2016 to reduce milking time. \n\n\n\nBryan and Gail Daniels exemplify how sustainable farming is possible while maintaining profitability and environmental integrity. As they continue to lead the way in progressive farming practices\, they inspire their community and fellow farmers to consider the long-term impacts of their operations on both the environment and society.

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Q&A 'Silvopasture - adding trees into a tillage system' with Jack Browne
DESCRIPTION:Jack is a 3rd generation farmer in Co. Carlow. He is a young tillage farmer who has incorporated agroforestry and permaculture design into his near 40 hectare (100 ac) farm. Around 3 hectares (7 ac) is under Native Woodland. He is certified organic\, selling oats to Tirlán\, aswell as producing hay and silage. Having taken on the farm in 2020\, he participated in an EIP project with Trees On The Land to become a demonstration site for silvoarable systems\, incorporating 3000 trees into his tillage system. His focus is on growing food crops rather than feed crops\, and has created a ‘low input\, premium output’ system by planting fruit and nut trees on his farm. Previously being a monocrop farm\, he has sown 12 hectares (30 ac) of multispecies swards to build fertility which he says has ‘lead to an explosion of biodiversity on the farm\, the amount of bird life that came back was unbelievable” Building on the trees he has already planted\, he is experimenting with min till methods which is a part of ACRES and hoping to expand the amount of land under agroforestry into the future. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an online Q&A to learn more about silvopasture and you can put any questions you have to Jack

SUMMARY:Ballybunion Bean Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join the Bean Revolution! Discover innovative ideas that challenge today’s food system and explore how humble beans can lead the way toward sustainability\, healthy soils\, and community empowerment. \n\n\n\nTO BOOK TICKETS CLICK HERE \n\n\n\nThe Ballybunion Bean Festival promises to be one of the highlights of summer 2025. This brand new\, unique festival focuses on the potential of beans as the most fun and climate friendly food for the future. \n\n\n\nThe Ballybunion Bean Festival was born out of Brilliant Ballybunion\, a Creative Climate Action Initiative\, supported by Creative Ireland. While growing food\, nurturing nature\, and creating art together\, the Brilliant Ballybunion team began to imagine a new future for local food production and community resilience in the face of the climate and biodiversity crises. \n\n\n\nThe future is beans! Beans are an amazing source of protein\, perfect for a plant based or a climatarian diet. Beans fix nitrogen in the soil and help local ecosystems to thrive. Beans also provide an opportunity for a new model of food production – from home and community gardens to small and big farmers alike. Growing beans can happen at any scale. \n\n\n\nThe Ballybunion Bean Festival is a blueprint for what is possible – by bringing together local artists\, collaborators\, chefs\, and businesses\, it demonstrates how community action can be intentional\, meaningful\, and fun!! \n\n\n\nFor the last few months\, the community has been growing beans for a feast\, which will be followed by a concert with Sailhym. The Festival will take place within the beautiful woodlands\, gardens and organic meadows of The Barna Way. \n\n\n\nCome join this truly slow food feast. This brand new festival will be gas craic\, full of beans and other corny puns. \n\n\n\nTO BOOK TICKETS CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:'A Dairy Farm - Vibrant with Life' Ask the Farmer Q&A with Joe Roche
DESCRIPTION:Joe Roche is a dairy farmer managing 69 hectares (170 ac) of land near Gorey\, Co. Wexford. With a herd of 115 cows\, he operates a conventional spring and autumn calving system\, milking year-round. He is a derogation farmer and has recently participated in the Ballymoney Stream EIP. As part of that project\, he dug a pond on his land\, which collects water off the road and that he is now delighted to see is full with frogspawn in the Springtime. He ‘likes to see nature growing and developing\, when you were young you would see lizards and eels and you didn’t realise the importance of them at the time. It would be nice to see them coming back’. Participation in the EIP helped achieve that on Joe’s farm. Bat and bird boxes were installed\, and alongside that\, 50 bats were found in a roost in an old farmhouse. Around 5 hectares (12 ac) of the farm are under woodland\, some of which is wet woodland. Joe holds hedgerows in high esteem and is continuously striving to improve their management\, he has ‘been watching hedges for a long time and proper management of the hedges going forward is going to be crucial’. Equally concerned about water quality\, he has signed up for Strathroy’s sustainable water scheme which will be building on the work he has already done to protect the Ballymoney stream in the last few years. These Q&As are supported by NPWS and DAFM

SUMMARY:Heritage Week Walk with Talamh Beo - Lough Mountain farm
DESCRIPTION:Organic Grass Fed Beef & Lamb Farm \n\n\n\nOne thing I have learned in life is that I can choose to make a living without exploiting people or nature. I took that lesson to heart when I returned to Loughatorick to carry on farming where my forefathers had before me.This path has led me to Lough Mountain Farm. \n\n\n\nTogether with my wife Sarah we have been running our Organic farm based on these principles. Our way of life will never make us rich but it will keep the wolf from the door. That is sufficient for us. We take what the Farm gives us and we offer our produce to you at a price that can work for you and for us. We can do this because we are in tune with the land and the animals. We don’t force them to perform beyond what is natural to them and this allows us to keep our costs low and our needs modest. \n\n\n\nOur produce is limited both seasonally and by an aversion to waste. We are aware of the harshness involved in rearing animals for meat and we don’t take any life lightly. By buying our Organic beef and lamb you are contributing \, not only to our livelihood\, but to our way of living and the future of our farm. We hope that you value this connection to your food as much as we do”.

SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Bryan & Gail Daniels: Putting Sustainability at the heart of a Conventional Dairy Farm
DESCRIPTION:For many years\, Bryan and Gail have been ahead of the curve on sustainable dairy production integrating LESS and a strategic breeding plan to boost milks solids production. As well as that\, Bryan is a Nuffield scholar in the area of integrating clover into grass swards with a keen interest in nature and habitat creation on farm. Recently they’ve pushed their co-op to produce a dairy nut that doesn’t include soy.  \n\n\n\nTo learn more on their various strategies for farming for nature\, join us on their farm walk.https://www.youtube.com/embed/bNCpc8ZS-nE \n\n\n\nAre you starting out on your nature-friendly farming journey and don’t know where to start? Apply to the Horse’s Mouth Mentorship Scheme and get specific advice for your farm from a fellow farmer. For more info https://www.farmingfornature.ie/your-farm/advice/the-horses-mouth/ \n\n\n\nWHAT ARE THE FARM WALKS: \n\n\n\n\nThis will be a 2.5 hour (approx.) visit to the farm and will include a walk around with the farmer\, a look at some of the habitats/species\, as well as the livestock and/or crops. Feel free to engage with the farmer about how they manage the land in support of nature.\n\n\n\nThese walks are for farmers and people with an interest in farming for nature. They are meant to be an interactive knowledge exchange. They are not suitable for children\, or for people/groups looking for an ‘organised walk’ in the countryside.\n\n\n\nThese walks are non-profit but a booking fee is necessary to minimise no-shows. It costs €12 to register and all funds are circulated back into the farming community.\n\n\n\nPlease wear suitable footwear for uneven and potentially muddy conditions.\n\n\n\nDogs are not welcome. You will be turned away if you arrive with one. We would ask that you please respect these farmers\, their land and livestock when visiting. \n\n\n\nPlease arrive at least 10 minutes before the walk commences.\n\n\n\n\nThank you to the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Department of Agriculture\, Food and the Marine for supporting these farm walks. \n\n\n\nFor more info on FFN events\, resources\, programmes – go to www.farmingfornature.ie

SUMMARY:'Ask the Farmer' Online Q&A with Nigel Gillis - ''Building resilient crops using conservation biology principles'
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Gillis operates a stockless conventional tillage farm in Grangecon\, Co Wicklow. Previously following a prescriptive approach\, he has transitioned his 73 hectares (180 ac) to using principles of conservation agriculture in the last 8 years. After noticing more and more pests and diseases and their chemical cures eating away at his margin\, he became disillusioned and wanted to try something else. After running into a member of BASE Ireland\, he became thirsty for knowledge. After learning that ‘every target species killed with insecticide kills 1700 non-target and potentially beneficial others\, as well as building insecticide resistance’\, he immediately ceased its use. He has followed that by not using rodenticide in the last three years\, herbicide use is down by 20% and has reduced nitrogen use by 60% and consequently getting away without using fungicide some years. More recently he has started his journey to organic conversion. He produces resilient crops of barley\, wheat\, beans and oats by using biological dressings on home saved seed\, specific soil sampling to monitor micronutrients and biological stimulants. This approach has meant he is ‘a hell of a lot happier with what he’s doing\, and the birds are back!’ Apex predators such as buzzards and kestrels\, have returned to the farm along with the Barn owl. Nigel leaves 20% of his farm as space for nature and doesn’t manage the internal hedgerows\, some of which are the old style ‘double ditch’. Testament to this respect for habitat\, Birdwatch Ireland have recorded 32 species in one hour on the land.

SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Andrew Bergin '12 Years of No-Till\, Is it Worth It?'
DESCRIPTION:How can changes to machinery\, workload\, soils\, crops and biodiversity help your tillage farm thrive? \n\n\n\nAndrew Bergin farms 320 acres of tillage. He practices no-till cereals while managing the soil in a way to promote high levels of biological benefits. Andrew sows cover crops\, and is constantly trailing on farm what species work best for his soil and rotation. This is an integral part that has allowed Andrew prosper in this system that benefit both the environment and the farmer. His approach is to improve the soil structure and the microflora and insect populations in the soil. Crops include spring and winter cereals\, oil seed rape and peas. Integrated crop management is practiced to minimise the use of sprays – no insecticides have been used in the last 5 years. Pollinator strips\, 6 – 10 meters wide are in place around most of the tillage fields margins\, attracting large numbers of insects and birds. In addition\, a number of fields margins and other areas\, which were difficult to cultivate for tillage crops\, have been planted with trees – oak\, beech\, birch\, holly\, hazel\, pheasant berry etc. Some of these have been in place for over 10 years and provide excellent cover for birds. In one area the pyramid orchid has established and is flourishing. Hedgerow are diverse and managed to encourage nature. Andrew’s farm is moving away from excessive inputs and looking bring new ideas and knowledge as well as a positive focus to a type of farming generally considered less environmentally friendly. “It is important to get involved in and look at local research so we can each discover what is best for our own soils\, not what chemical is best to throw on it.”
