DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to an information evening about the Old Irish Goats on Howth on the 14th of November at 7 pm @ Howth Yacht Club.  \n Dubbed “the Goats That Fight Fire”\, Melissa Jeuken will share her perspective on this pioneering endeavour which reintroduced the Old Irish Goat to Howth Head after a hiatus of over half a century. To help with upland fire prevention and heathland grazing\, the project combined the brilliant browsing capacity of the Old Irish Goat with a virtual fencing system to target the highly flammable European Gorse. The project supports the conservation and breeding of Old Irish Goats\, with genetically informed breeding and genotype/phenotype analysis being an important aspect of the project. \n We are also offering a short tour of the fire breaks with the Old Irish Goats on active duty on Nov 14th from 11:30 to 13:30 p.m. and an afternoon walk from 14:30 to 16:30. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into this groundbreaking endeavour which concludes in August 2024. DESCRIPTION:Ask the Farmer Q&A Session with James Gilmartin – Farming Progressively to the Land’s Natural Capacity on the 12th December at 8pm.  Please register here\n\nJames Gilmartin is a 7th generation farmer\, who farms alongside his father in North County Leitrim. James runs a mixed organic farm. He keeps a suckler herd and a small herd of Dexters\, as well as a small flock of sheep. He keeps a bees and chickens too\, producing honey and eggs for local customers. As a farmer\, James doesn’t want to push the land beyond its natural capability\, thus low stocking density\, low external inputs and extensive management of the land are crucial elements of his farming system. Through the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme\, James is just one of a few farmers currently trialling NoFence cattle collars to deliver targeted grazing in an upland setting. He has installed PV panels on the shed roof. Eircode will be shared with registered attendees. \nWith final negotiations of the Nature Restoration Law around the corner\, now is a vital time to learn how the agricultural sector can build towards a nature-friendly future. In particular\, how additional funding streams can enable farmers to better manage their high-diversity landscape features and increase soil organic carbon. On this farm walk\, Trevor Harris will tell the story of how his nature-friendly approach to farming promotes biodiversity and builds resilience in the soil\, all while retaining productivity. Trevor is a Farming for Nature Ambassador running a 57ha organic and biodynamic certified beef and tillage farm near Donadea\, Co. Kildare. We will see first-hand the land and practices that produce oats sent to Flavahan’s for your morning porridge\, the barley that ends up as Demeter-certified whiskey\, and the vegetables that go to Sprout Food Co. for your lunch salad! Trevor will also share the role his suckler cow herd and lowland ewe sheep flock play in his farming enterprise. We will discuss the value of healthy hedgerows and see how Trevor manages his lengths of hawthorn\, cherry\, spindle\, hazel\, oak\, and other species. Not only does he create a habitat for pollinators and wildlife\, but also for all the unseen worms and micro-organisms which are fundamental to growing crops and sustaining life above ground.\nJim has a small suckler herd and 2 working horses that help work the land and provide essential manure for soil fertility. Jim is both a teacher and a commercial grower of fruit and vegetables. He combines old traditions with new knowledge and methods\, proving that you can generate a good commercial yield from a small area without compromising nature. He has distilled his farm knowledge down to an exact science and created a bank of wisdom which he is skilled in sharing. Everything Jim does as a farmer is a deliberate move to try to harness the resources that nature already offers us in terms of soil health\, pest control and crop growth.

SUMMARY:Farming for Nature Ask the Farmer Q&A with David Kerr
DESCRIPTION:Our next instalment in our monthly Ask the Farmer Q&A Series will take place on March 12 at 8pm. \n ‘Running an Intensive Dairy Farm with Space for Nature’ \nDavid Kerr is a commercial dairy farmer from Ballyfin Co Laois. The 70-ha farm is comprised of mixed land ranging from good grassland to wet heavy land to cutaway bog. David milks 150 cross-bred cows\, “following the old farming mantra of one cow to the acre”. He also keeps a small flock of Dorset Horn sheep on the farm. 20% of the land has been reseeded with multispecies swards and clover and this has helped reduce the amount of artificial nitrogen spread on the land. David is an advocate of efficient grassland management\, and he hosted a very successful Irish Grassland Association summer tour on his farm in 2014. \nThere is 3 acres of woodland on the farm\, mainly oak\, which was planted by David’s late father George. To honour the passing of George last year\, David devoted an area of land to a wildlife pond. The 1.5-acre pond was dug and different tree species were planted around the pond. Although the pond is not yet one year old\, it has already attracted numerous bird and insect species to the land and has become a central part of the farm. David has left approximately 12% of his farm as non-commercially productive land and he values this land for its biodiversity and wildlife value. “If you farm in a technically efficient manner\, you can afford to leave some land aside and dedicated for nature.” \nDavid is a strong example of a farmer who runs a commercial and productive farming enterprise\, all the while leaving space aside for nature\, biodiversity and wildlife on his land. \nRegister your place for this free Q&A event on March 12 here
