SUMMARY:FFN Farm Walk - No-Till And Conservation Agriculture with room for nature and forestry
DESCRIPTION:Farm walk & practical actions for nature with Farming for Nature Ambassador Tom Tierney. \n\n\n\n‘No-Till And Conservation Agriculture with room for nature and forestry‘. \n\n\n\nThe Farming for Nature (FFN) farm walks are an opportunity for FFN Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Tierney runs a 200-acre regenerative farm in county Kildare. The primary aspect of the farm is tillage production\, operating under the principles of conservation agriculture – cover cropping\, increasing soil organic matter\, crop rotations and direct drilling. Barley\, oats\, wheat\, beans and oilseed rape are grown on the land. Animal manure is brought in from neighbouring farms and composted on site before being spread on the land. White clover is grown as a companion crop and in field margins. Tom has been running a direct drilling system since 2015 and has observed tremendous benefits of this lower soil disturbance method for life both above and below the soil surface – “Biodiversity starts beneath our feet. The biological health of the soil plays a crucial role in increasing biodiversity.” Tom has reduced the amount of synthetic inputs required on the farm and there has been no insecticide used on the land in 6 years. Tom is continuously experimenting with different ways to produce crops in a more natural way. He has two wormery’s on the farm and he makes his own bio-stimulants from vermi-juice\, seaweed\, molasses and silica which further build the soil biology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is about 30 acres of mixed forestry on the farm\, 60% hardwood and 40% softwood and Tom operates a continuous cover forestry system. There are about 12 acres of conservation areas on the farm. There is an acre of wetland with naturally regenerating woodland. There are 7 acres of wildflowers on the farm and 4 acres of permanent clover. Tom is a member of BASE Ireland\, he is a Teagasc Signpost Tillage Farmer and a participant in the Protecting Farmland Pollinators EIP Project.

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Eco-Social Farmers Lisa Fingleton & Rena Blake
DESCRIPTION:Rena Blake and Lisa Fingleton run the Barna Way\, an 8-hectare eco-social farm near Ballybunion\, Co. Kerry. Lisa and Rena say that the traditional way of farming isn’t necessarily working for all small Irish farms. They’ve had every kind of farm enterprise over the last twenty years including organic horticulture. One day after earning just €5 at the market\, they decided to change something. Now\, instead of going out to the community\, they’re inviting the community to them.    \n\n\n\nThe farm has always had a focus on encouraging biodiversity\, and they now host nature-based events\, and a Creative Climate Action project called Brilliant Ballybunion. They work with the local community to grow food\, protect nature and be creative all at the same time. Meditating in their traditional hay meadow has proven to be one of their most popular activities\, while the Social Farming program visits every Friday to learn about growing and experience a much-needed nature boost.  \n\n\n\nLisa\, an artist\, and Rena a photographer\, work to integrate creativity into how they think about farming and the land. They want to encourage people to use their imagination and connection with the land to create the future we want. She says\, ‘sometimes I say we are farming and growing ideas as much as anything else these days’.   \n\n\n\nTheir Brilliant Ballybunion project will engage the local community to creatively explore the future for Ballybunion in terms of protecting biodiversity and local food systems. The project works with Ballybunion Community Forum and diverse community collaborators to grow food\, protect habitats and create a vision for the future in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss.   \n\n\n\nTheir efforts for biodiversity include planting native woodland and maintaining traditional hay meadows. Their farm hosts barn owls\, the elusive cuckoo and many other not so common wild creatures. Rena added “No matter how small you are\, you can still actively work to create change and make things better. We share this planet with other creatures and we need to learn how to cohabit together.’

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Michael and Tom Keane 'Working with Heritage Breeds on the Farm'
DESCRIPTION:Tom & Michael keep heritage native breeds on their respective dairy and beef farms. \n\n\n\nThey carefully manage their livestock to protect the unique habitats and flora that grow there on the farm.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom & Michael Keane are brothers farming 135 hectares (334 ac) along a Special Area of Conservation at the Shannon Estuary in Co. Limerick. Michael focuses on dairy production whilst Tom focuses on beef and sheep. \n\n\n\nThey are big proponents of rare breeds and exclusively rear natives such as Droimeann and Shorthorn cattle and Galway sheep. Tom has been observing Droimeann traits over time to improve the herds genetics and have noted that they are low maintenance and can ‘mind themselves’. They have ‘good longevity\, are fertile and have plenty of milk when crossbred’. The dairy farm has been organic for over two decades and supplies the Little Milk Company. The beef and sheep farm\, also organic\, supplies weanlings to finishers. Livestock are all completely grass-fed. \n\n\n\nTheir farms are located in a landscape similar to the Burren\, with a vast array of habitats\, including a very rare brackish lagoon situated on karst limestones. Most of the unique flora found in the Burren can be found on their land too and they have hosted many botanists and researchers interested in these rare species. They are in ACRES and are actively engaged with conservation efforts through the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme. Amongst other things\, they have installed otter holts and provided accommodation for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat. Rare plants such as the Bee and Butterfly Orchids\, thrive in their species rich grasslands. They propagate native trees from seed\, particularly Hazel and plant them into scrub. \n\n\n\nThey both have a deep connection to nature and are incredibly knowledgeable about the ecological and cultural history of their area.

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Ken Gill
DESCRIPTION:Ken Gill is an organic beef and tillage farmer near Edenderry Co. Offaly. He keeps around 60-70 suckler cows and finishes animals at 2 years\, which are all completely grass-fed. Prior to 2015\, he was farming conventionally but struggling to make it work financially. He tried organics and has been impressed with the results ‘’The grazing ground gets very little fertiliser\, it’s amazing. Soil tests a few years after going organic showed P & K levels had improved rather than declined’. He has been carefully managing soil fertility since\, ensuring no ground is left bare and catching and using effluent that runs off the yard. In his rotation\, he produces turnip\, kale and rape for fodder\, which also has the benefit of breaking up the soil for subsequent crops. He produces around 8 hectares (20 ac) of oats for Flahavan’s\, and then introduces red clover for fertility.  \n\n\n\nHe is a part of the Teagasc Future Beef group. In 2023\, group members reported very poor grass growth. In contrast\, he notes in ‘our system the weather didn’t make much difference\, it was more resilient compared to the other Future Beef farmers – the financial figures are more than holding their own’. He used to keep a ‘short\, back and sides’ approach to hedgerow management but now lets them grow.  He has observed how the hedge provides a shelter not just for cattle but for grass too ‘you can see it after a cold east wind for a couple of weeks\, there is a big difference between the exposed field and the sheltered fields.’ This is just one example on his farm of ‘how helping nature helps your bottom line too’.

DESCRIPTION:Join this farm walk on practical actions for nature with Farming for Nature Ambassador Boyd Bryce ‘Managing a wide variety of habitats on a productive sheep and tillage farm’. The Farming for Nature  farm walks are an opportunity for FFN Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. This is part of our ‘Shared Island’ series of farm walks\, in partnership with the Nature Friendly Farming Network and we encourage farmers from Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to attend. \n\n\n\nBoyd and his wife Bride run a 350-acre farm on Inch Island\, Co. Donegal. The farm is a mix of arable areas\, sheep pastures and woodland\, all of which is managed sensitively for nature. Boyd farms his land with nature and manages all aspects of the farm with nature in mind\, including his shorelines\, wetlands\, woodlands\, field boundaries and non-farmed areas. Boyd also actively creates new habitats for wildlife ranging from waders to amphibians. He is a passionate birder and has been involved in various bird-based projects over the years. Boyd is also enthusiastic about educating others and his farm has been used as an example of best practice for conservation farming. \n\n\n\nWHAT ARE THE FARM WALKS: \n\n\n\n\nThis will be a 2.5 hour (approximately) visit to the farm and will include a walk around with the farmer/farm family\, a look at some of the habitats and species present\, as well as the livestock and/or crops\, and a discussion with the farmer about how he/she/they manage the land in support of nature.\n\n\n\nThese walks are for farmers and people with an interest in farming for nature. They are meant to be an interactive knowledge exchange between people with a real interest in farming and nature. Kilkenny into a model of sustainability and environmental stewardship. Farming 157 hectares (388 acres) in the scenic south Kilkenny hills\, the Daniels family is committed to not only producing high-quality milk but also nurturing their land for future generations. \n\n\n\nAdopting a conventional spring calving dairy system with a focus on animal and soil welfare\, the Daniels’ operation includes 272 cows. Faced with  milk quota limitations when starting out\, Bryan and Gail pivoted their strategy to produce the cheapest litre of milk possible with the added benefit that this was helping the environment. \n\n\n\nSince 2003\, the Daniels have championed the use of clover to reduce reliance on artificial chemical fertilizers. Their innovative practices include: \n\n\n\nReduced Synthetic Nitrogen Use: Over 50% reduction\, from 220kg/ha\, has been achieved by incorporating clover into their pastures. Use of Protected Urea: Implemented for the last 8 years\, showcasing their commitment to minimizing emissions. Selective Dry Cow Therapy: Employed since 2012 for improved animal welfare and production quality. \n\n\n\nThe Daniels take pride in their strategic breeding program\, ensuring they only breed  from cows free from lameness\, high cell counts\, or poor temperament. This dedication has resulted in a commendable somatic cell count of just 73\, alongside a yield of 5\,422 liters of milk per cow with 4.35% fat and 3.71% protein. \n\n\n\nReflecting their commitment to sustainable practices\, Bryan insists on sourcing soy and palm-free feed and has eliminated chemical sprays for dock leaves since 2003. A significant portion of their farm has been kept completely chemical nitrogen-free in recent years. \n\n\n\nThe family’s connection to the land runs deep\, as Bryan is the fifth generation to manage the farm\, fostering a long-standing tradition of farming in harmony with nature. Their ongoing initiatives include Creating Habitats: From installing owl boxes and planting native trees to constructing ponds for aquatic species. Environmental Schemes Participation: Actively involved since 1997\, they promote biodiversity by maintaining traditional hay meadows and engaging in hedge-laying each year. \n\n\n\nGail’s venture into soap-making from their farm’s milk diversifies their business\, demonstrating their innovative spirit. The couple actively prioritizes human sustainability\, implementing practices that allow for work-life balance\, such as installing a 44-point rotary parlour in 2016 to reduce milking time. \n\n\n\nBryan and Gail Daniels exemplify how sustainable farming is possible while maintaining profitability and environmental integrity. As they continue to lead the way in progressive farming practices\, they inspire their community and fellow farmers to consider the long-term impacts of their operations on both the environment and society.

Feel free to engage with the farmer about how they manage the land in support of nature.\n\n\n\nThese walks are for farmers and people with an interest in farming for nature. They are meant to be an interactive knowledge exchange. They are not suitable for children\, or for people/groups looking for an ‘organised walk’ in the countryside.\n\n\n\nThese walks are non-profit but a booking fee is necessary to minimise no-shows. DESCRIPTION:Jack is a 3rd generation farmer in Co. Carlow. He is a young tillage farmer who has incorporated agroforestry and permaculture design into his near 40 hectare (100 ac) farm. Around 3 hectares (7 ac) is under Native Woodland. He is certified organic\, selling oats to Tirlán\, aswell as producing hay and silage. Having taken on the farm in 2020\, he participated in an EIP project with Trees On The Land to become a demonstration site for silvoarable systems\, incorporating 3000 trees into his tillage system. His focus is on growing food crops rather than feed crops\, and has created a ‘low input\, premium output’ system by planting fruit and nut trees on his farm. Previously being a monocrop farm\, he has sown 12 hectares (30 ac) of multispecies swards to build fertility which he says has ‘lead to an explosion of biodiversity on the farm\, the amount of bird life that came back was unbelievable” Building on the trees he has already planted\, he is experimenting with min till methods which is a part of ACRES and hoping to expand the amount of land under agroforestry into the future. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an online Q&A to learn more about silvopasture and you can put any questions you have to Jack
