SUMMARY:6 week Regenerative Agriculture Course with Síola Chroí
DESCRIPTION:Facilitator Panel – 6 week Regenerative Agriculture Course \n\n\n\n\nApply Here\n\n\n\n\nSíolta Chroí have developed a 6-week Introduction to Regenerative Agriculture course. Over the past number of years the programme has been highly successful\, bringing more farmers into the conversation around regenerative agriculture and supporting the transition towards more resilient farming systems. \n\n\n\nBuilding on this success\, Síolta Chroí now aims to deliver the course in locations across Ireland. \n\n\n\nTo support this expansion\, we are creating a panel of facilitators who will be available to deliver the programme in different regions. \n\n\n\nAbout the Course \n\n\n\nThe 6-week course explores key topics including: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is Regenerative Agriculture\n\n\n\nSoil Health & Biology\n\n\n\nWater Management\n\n\n\nAgroforestry\n\n\n\nDirect Selling & Farm Viability\n\n\n\nIntegration into Farm Goal Setting & Holistic Management\n\n\n\n\nThe course is delivered using non-formal education methodologies\, with a strong emphasis on dialogue\, peer learning\, and farmer experience. (Training in these facilitation methods will be provided to selected candidates). \n\n\n\nWe are seeking individuals who: \n\n\n\n\nHave knowledge and experience in regenerative agriculture\n\n\n\nAre comfortable facilitating group learning and discussions\n\n\n\nWho are good clear communicators\n\n\n\nHave experience working with farmers or rural communities\n\n\n\nAre interested and passionate in supporting the spread of regenerative practices across Ireland\n\n\n\n\nPanel Information \n\n\n\nSuccessful applicants will be placed on a facilitator panel from which facilitators will be selected as courses are scheduled in different regions. \n\n\n\nPlease note that placement on the panel does not guarantee work\, but provides the opportunity to be considered for facilitation as programmes are organised. \n\n\n\nDeadline for applications 13th April 2026

SUMMARY:'Ask the Farmer' Online Q&A - 'Making a Living on 3 Acres and Producing Nutrient Dense Food’
DESCRIPTION:Janet and Jenny began farming together in 2016 on a 3-acre organic hillside farm. Inspired by mentor Rory McGorian\, they focused on high-value crops like salads and leafy greens\, initially selling to local supermarkets and restaurants\, and now manage over 1.5 acres of outdoor production beds while also planting thousands of trees. \n\n\n\nIn 2019\, they transitioned to a no-dig approach inspired by Jean Martin\, refining their methods to maximize soil fertility using pony manure and waste materials\, producing 80% of their own nutrients. They have maintained the farm as their primary income for nearly ten years and recently planted a syntropic agroforest. Their future plans include expanding orchards and hedgerows\, opening a farm shop\, and offering courses. Observing a significant return of wildlife\, they emphasize that “nature is front and centre in everything we do.”

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A ‘How To Work an Intensive Dairy Farm and Create a Haven for Biodiversity’
DESCRIPTION:In the heart of County Wexford\, not far from the town of Gorey\, Alan and Cheryl Poole are redefining what it means to be an Irish dairy farmer. Along with their three children\, they run a conventional but nature-conscious dairy system\, milking 72 cows across 103 acres. While their system is intensive and high-performing\, over 20% of their farm is dedicated to nature and biodiversity. “We can do intensive and give space for nature\,” says Alan\, whose background in ecology has deeply influenced how the family approaches farming. Their herd\, made up of high-EBI cows\, delivers high milk solids and maintains a low somatic cell count—ensuring both productivity and animal health. But the Pooles are clear: their focus isn’t only on production. It’s about farming with a conscience. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Q&A is supported by the NPWS and DAFM.

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Q&A 'What is conservation grazing and what are the benefits for commonage?'
DESCRIPTION:Seánie O’Baoill is a runs a traditional sheep and cattle farm near An Fál Carrach in the Donegal Gaeltacht. He rears 150 Mayo and Connemara ewes and 8 Belted Galloway cows across upland commonage\, coastal lowlands\, and on Toraigh Island. He has been a phenomenal local leader advocating for proper upland management be added to the green cert and a key figure in helping the results-based Corncrake LIFE project increase the populations of the endangered bird by 35%. He recently was instrumental in bringing an EIP project to the area that focuses on helping farmers on commonage manage it better for nature and for the longevity of upland farming.

SUMMARY:'Can Farming Thrive in A Protected Landscape' Ask The Farmer Online Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Tony Grogan farms 22 hectares in the Glen of Aherlow\, Co. Tipperary\, rearing a purebred Aberdeen Angus suckler herd under a fully organic system since 2015. \n\n\n\nWith the River Aherlow\, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for freshwater pearl mussels\, bordering his land\, Tony manages the farm with precision and care\, adapting his methods to suit the landscape\, from hilly terrain to river plain. Instead of spreading slurry\, Tony composts and carefully covers his farmyard manure\, preserving its value and avoiding nutrient loss. He then spreads it strategically\, using weekly grass measurement data to guide where it’s needed most. This targeted approach not only protects water quality but supports a healthier soil ecosystem without excess input. \n\n\n\nTony has embraced a long rotation grazing system\, working with what the land naturally supports: “What’s grown in my field is what’s suitable for it.” This hands-off\, observation-based approach has encouraged the return of native plants like lady’s smock\, red clover\, self-heal\, and mint. The restored swards support a more diverse insect and soil life and it’s had an impact on herd health too. With low parasite loads confirmed by faecal egg counts\, Tony rarely needs to dose his animals\, allowing him to maintain organic compliance without compromise.

SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Tom & Michael Keane: The Value in Working With Heritage Dairy\, Beef & Sheep Breeds
DESCRIPTION:Tom & Michael Keane are brothers farming 135 hectares (334 ac) along a Special Area of Conservation at the Shannon Estuary in Co. Limerick. Michael focuses on dairy production whilst Tom focuses on beef and sheep. \n\n\n\nThey are big proponents of rare breeds and exclusively rear natives such as Droimeann and Shorthorn cattle and Galway sheep. Tom has been observing Droimeann traits over time to improve the herds genetics and have noted that they are low maintenance and can ‘mind themselves’. They have ‘good longevity\, are fertile and have plenty of milk when crossbred’. The dairy farm has been organic for over two decades and supplies the Little Milk Company. The beef and sheep farm\, also organic\, supplies weanlings to finishers. Livestock are all completely grass-fed. \n\n\n\nTheir farms are located in a landscape similar to the Burren\, with a vast array of habitats\, including a very rare brackish lagoon situated on karst limestones. Most of the unique flora found in the Burren can be found on their land too and they have hosted many botanists and researchers interested in these rare species. They are in ACRES and are actively engaged with conservation efforts through the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme. Amongst other things\, they have installed otter holts and provided accommodation for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat. Rare plants such as the Bee and Butterfly Orchids\, thrive in their species rich grasslands. They propagate native trees from seed\, particularly Hazel and plant them into scrub. \n\n\n\nThey both have a deep connection to nature and are incredibly knowledgeable about the ecological and cultural history of their area. \n\n\n\nTo learn more on their various strategies for farming for nature\, join us on their farm walk.https://www.youtube.com/embed/Gx3m7g84Lm8 \n\n\n\nAre you starting out on your nature-friendly farming journey and don’t know where to start? SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Aonghus Ó' Coistealbha: The Business of Chemical Free Market Gardening on A Smallholding
DESCRIPTION:Aonghus Johnny Choil Mhaidhc Ó Coistealbha is a market gardener from Connemara Co. Galway. An Garraí Glas is a 1-acre farm where Aonghus grows a variety of chemical-free vegetables including lettuce/salad leaves\, onions\, tomatoes\, radishes\, herbs and more. A tremendous amount of vegetables are grown from a small space\, not to mention a challenging landscape with plenty of stone and a strong Atlantic prevailing wind. All of the fresh produce grown is sold to local shops and restaurants\, as well as in the on-farm shop. Aonghus is particularly interested in regenerative farming; composting\, soil health and building fertility is of utmost importance to this farming system. Compost is made on the farm using food waste from local café’s and restaurants\, seaweed and other organic material from the land. Aonghus is passionate about his local Gaeltacht community and has worked hard to educate the local community in terms of where their food comes from and how it is grown. His mission is to produce high quality\, fresh and nutritious veg for the local community. He is open and willing to share his farming advice and story with anyone who would like to learn\, and he takes a number of interns and volunteers on the farm every year. \n\n\n\nTo learn more on his various strategies for farming for nature\, join us on his farm walk. \n\n\n\nAre you starting out on your nature-friendly farming journey and don’t know where to start? SUMMARY:Farm walks 2025 - Gerard Deegan 'Composting\, Biochar and Continuous Cover Forestry for Beef Farms'
DESCRIPTION:Gerard Deegan is a lifelong farmer from Co. Westmeath. The farm has been certified organic for over 20 years. Originally a dairy farmer\, Gerard transitioned to a mixed beef and forestry enterprise back in 2012. There is now 100 acres of forestry on the land – 50% hardwood and 50% softwood. Gerard is an advocate for diverse forestry systems\, he practices continuous cover forestry and has incorporated wildlife strips between rows of trees. There are approximately 60 different species of trees on the farm – including Norway spruce\, Scots pine\, Larch\, Douglas Fir\, Ash\, Oak\, Sycamore\, Beech and many more. Gerard won the RDS Farm Forestry Award in 2019. Additionally\, he manages a small suckler herd producing organic beef. He also keeps bees\, producing honey for neighbours and friends. \n\n\n\nGerard holds a holistic outlook on his farm\, understanding and valuing the importance of every living creature on the land – from the microscopic soil fungi to the cattle\, from the bees to the oak trees. “The bees are a lesson in life. They have taught me a lot about nature. How we are all connected\, and how everyone has a role to play\, no matter how big or small that role may be…” An advocate for the importance of community\, Gerard is involved in Social Farming and a member of Leitrim Organic Farmers Coop since 1990. \n\n\n\nGerard does composting as source of fertility for his fields as well as producing biochar from Ash trees affected by die-back. He uses mob-grazing methods to manage his grasslands. \n\n\n\nTo learn more on his various ways for farming for nature\, join us on his farm walk.https://www.youtube.com/embed/1kH1hM8FBuo \n\n\n\nAre you starting out on your nature-friendly farming journey and don’t know where to start? SUMMARY:Farm Walks 2025 - Andrew Bergin '12 Years of No-Till\, Is it Worth It?'
DESCRIPTION:How can changes to machinery\, workload\, soils\, crops and biodiversity help your tillage farm thrive? \n\n\n\nAndrew Bergin farms 320 acres of tillage. He practices no-till cereals while managing the soil in a way to promote high levels of biological benefits. Andrew sows cover crops\, and is constantly trailing on farm what species work best for his soil and rotation. This is an integral part that has allowed Andrew prosper in this system that benefit both the environment and the farmer. His approach is to improve the soil structure and the microflora and insect populations in the soil. Crops include spring and winter cereals\, oil seed rape and peas. Integrated crop management is practiced to minimise the use of sprays – no insecticides have been used in the last 5 years. Pollinator strips\, 6 – 10 meters wide are in place around most of the tillage fields margins\, attracting large numbers of insects and birds. In addition\, a number of fields margins and other areas\, which were difficult to cultivate for tillage crops\, have been planted with trees – oak\, beech\, birch\, holly\, hazel\, pheasant berry etc. Some of these have been in place for over 10 years and provide excellent cover for birds. In one area the pyramid orchid has established and is flourishing. Hedgerow are diverse and managed to encourage nature. Andrew’s farm is moving away from excessive inputs and looking bring new ideas and knowledge as well as a positive focus to a type of farming generally considered less environmentally friendly. “It is important to get involved in and look at local research so we can each discover what is best for our own soils\, not what chemical is best to throw on it.”

SUMMARY:'Ask the Farmer' Online Q&A with Nigel Gillis - ''Building resilient crops using conservation biology principles'
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Gillis operates a stockless conventional tillage farm in Grangecon\, Co Wicklow. Previously following a prescriptive approach\, he has transitioned his 73 hectares (180 ac) to using principles of conservation agriculture in the last 8 years. After noticing more and more pests and diseases and their chemical cures eating away at his margin\, he became disillusioned and wanted to try something else. After running into a member of BASE Ireland\, he became thirsty for knowledge. After learning that ‘every target species killed with insecticide kills 1700 non-target and potentially beneficial others\, as well as building insecticide resistance’\, he immediately ceased its use. He has followed that by not using rodenticide in the last three years\, herbicide use is down by 20% and has reduced nitrogen use by 60% and consequently getting away without using fungicide some years. More recently he has started his journey to organic conversion. He produces resilient crops of barley\, wheat\, beans and oats by using biological dressings on home saved seed\, specific soil sampling to monitor micronutrients and biological stimulants. This approach has meant he is ‘a hell of a lot happier with what he’s doing\, and the birds are back!’ Apex predators such as buzzards and kestrels\, have returned to the farm along with the Barn owl. Nigel leaves 20% of his farm as space for nature and doesn’t manage the internal hedgerows\, some of which are the old style ‘double ditch’. Testament to this respect for habitat\, Birdwatch Ireland have recorded 32 species in one hour on the land.

SUMMARY:Heritage Week Walk with Talamh Beo - Lough Mountain farm
DESCRIPTION:Organic Grass Fed Beef & Lamb Farm \n\n\n\nOne thing I have learned in life is that I can choose to make a living without exploiting people or nature. I took that lesson to heart when I returned to Loughatorick to carry on farming where my forefathers had before me.This path has led me to Lough Mountain Farm. \n\n\n\nTogether with my wife Sarah we have been running our Organic farm based on these principles. Our way of life will never make us rich but it will keep the wolf from the door. That is sufficient for us. We take what the Farm gives us and we offer our produce to you at a price that can work for you and for us. We can do this because we are in tune with the land and the animals. We don’t force them to perform beyond what is natural to them and this allows us to keep our costs low and our needs modest. \n\n\n\nOur produce is limited both seasonally and by an aversion to waste. We are aware of the harshness involved in rearing animals for meat and we don’t take any life lightly. By buying our Organic beef and lamb you are contributing \, not only to our livelihood\, but to our way of living and the future of our farm. We hope that you value this connection to your food as much as we do”.

SUMMARY:'A Dairy Farm - Vibrant with Life' Ask the Farmer Q&A with Joe Roche
DESCRIPTION:Joe Roche is a dairy farmer managing 69 hectares (170 ac) of land near Gorey\, Co. Wexford. With a herd of 115 cows\, he operates a conventional spring and autumn calving system\, milking year-round. He is a derogation farmer and has recently participated in the Ballymoney Stream EIP. As part of that project\, he dug a pond on his land\, which collects water off the road and that he is now delighted to see is full with frogspawn in the Springtime. He ‘likes to see nature growing and developing\, when you were young you would see lizards and eels and you didn’t realise the importance of them at the time. It would be nice to see them coming back’. Participation in the EIP helped achieve that on Joe’s farm. Bat and bird boxes were installed\, and alongside that\, 50 bats were found in a roost in an old farmhouse. Around 5 hectares (12 ac) of the farm are under woodland\, some of which is wet woodland. Joe holds hedgerows in high esteem and is continuously striving to improve their management\, he has ‘been watching hedges for a long time and proper management of the hedges going forward is going to be crucial’. Equally concerned about water quality\, he has signed up for Strathroy’s sustainable water scheme which will be building on the work he has already done to protect the Ballymoney stream in the last few years. These Q&As are supported by NPWS and DAFM
