SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Michael and Tom Keane 'Working with Heritage Breeds on the Farm'
DESCRIPTION:Tom & Michael keep heritage native breeds on their respective dairy and beef farms. \n\n\n\nThey carefully manage their livestock to protect the unique habitats and flora that grow there on the farm. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom & Michael Keane are brothers farming 135 hectares (334 ac) along a Special Area of Conservation at the Shannon Estuary in Co. Limerick. Michael focuses on dairy production whilst Tom focuses on beef and sheep. \n\n\n\nThey are big proponents of rare breeds and exclusively rear natives such as Droimeann and Shorthorn cattle and Galway sheep. Tom has been observing Droimeann traits over time to improve the herds genetics and have noted that they are low maintenance and can ‘mind themselves’. They have ‘good longevity\, are fertile and have plenty of milk when crossbred’. The dairy farm has been organic for over two decades and supplies the Little Milk Company. The beef and sheep farm\, also organic\, supplies weanlings to finishers. Livestock are all completely grass-fed. \n\n\n\nTheir farms are located in a landscape similar to the Burren\, with a vast array of habitats\, including a very rare brackish lagoon situated on karst limestones. Most of the unique flora found in the Burren can be found on their land too and they have hosted many botanists and researchers interested in these rare species. They are in ACRES and are actively engaged with conservation efforts through the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme. Amongst other things\, they have installed otter holts and provided accommodation for the Lesser Horseshoe Bat. Rare plants such as the Bee and Butterfly Orchids\, thrive in their species rich grasslands. They propagate native trees from seed\, particularly Hazel and plant them into scrub. \n\n\n\nThey both have a deep connection to nature and are incredibly knowledgeable about the ecological and cultural history of their area.

SUMMARY:Ask the Farmer Online Q&A with Eco-Social Farmers Lisa Fingleton & Rena Blake
DESCRIPTION:Rena Blake and Lisa Fingleton run the Barna Way\, an 8-hectare eco-social farm near Ballybunion\, Co. Kerry. Lisa and Rena say that the traditional way of farming isn’t necessarily working for all small Irish farms. They’ve had every kind of farm enterprise over the last twenty years including organic horticulture. One day after earning just €5 at the market\, they decided to change something. Now\, instead of going out to the community\, they’re inviting the community to them.    \n\n\n\nThe farm has always had a focus on encouraging biodiversity\, and they now host nature-based events\, and a Creative Climate Action project called Brilliant Ballybunion. They work with the local community to grow food\, protect nature and be creative all at the same time. Meditating in their traditional hay meadow has proven to be one of their most popular activities\, while the Social Farming program visits every Friday to learn about growing and experience a much-needed nature boost.  \n\n\n\nLisa\, an artist\, and Rena a photographer\, work to integrate creativity into how they think about farming and the land. They want to encourage people to use their imagination and connection with the land to create the future we want. She says\, ‘sometimes I say we are farming and growing ideas as much as anything else these days’.   \n\n\n\nTheir Brilliant Ballybunion project will engage the local community to creatively explore the future for Ballybunion in terms of protecting biodiversity and local food systems. The project works with Ballybunion Community Forum and diverse community collaborators to grow food\, protect habitats and create a vision for the future in the context of climate change and biodiversity loss.   \n\n\n\nTheir efforts for biodiversity include planting native woodland and maintaining traditional hay meadows. Their farm hosts barn owls\, the elusive cuckoo and many other not so common wild creatures. Rena added “No matter how small you are\, you can still actively work to create change and make things better. We share this planet with other creatures and we need to learn how to cohabit together.’

SUMMARY:FFN Farm Walk - No-Till And Conservation Agriculture with room for nature and forestry
DESCRIPTION:Farm walk & practical actions for nature with Farming for Nature Ambassador Tom Tierney. \n\n\n\n‘No-Till And Conservation Agriculture with room for nature and forestry‘. \n\n\n\nThe Farming for Nature (FFN) farm walks are an opportunity for FFN Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTom Tierney runs a 200-acre regenerative farm in county Kildare. The primary aspect of the farm is tillage production\, operating under the principles of conservation agriculture – cover cropping\, increasing soil organic matter\, crop rotations and direct drilling. Barley\, oats\, wheat\, beans and oilseed rape are grown on the land. Animal manure is brought in from neighbouring farms and composted on site before being spread on the land. White clover is grown as a companion crop and in field margins. Tom has been running a direct drilling system since 2015 and has observed tremendous benefits of this lower soil disturbance method for life both above and below the soil surface – “Biodiversity starts beneath our feet. The biological health of the soil plays a crucial role in increasing biodiversity.” Tom has reduced the amount of synthetic inputs required on the farm and there has been no insecticide used on the land in 6 years. Tom is continuously experimenting with different ways to produce crops in a more natural way. He has two wormery’s on the farm and he makes his own bio-stimulants from vermi-juice\, seaweed\, molasses and silica which further build the soil biology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere is about 30 acres of mixed forestry on the farm\, 60% hardwood and 40% softwood and Tom operates a continuous cover forestry system. There are about 12 acres of conservation areas on the farm. There is an acre of wetland with naturally regenerating woodland. There are 7 acres of wildflowers on the farm and 4 acres of permanent clover. Tom is a member of BASE Ireland\, he is a Teagasc Signpost Tillage Farmer and a participant in the Protecting Farmland Pollinators EIP Project.

SUMMARY:FFN - Farming for the Head\, Heart and the Pocket – Regenerative Systems for Sustainable Farming
DESCRIPTION:Farming for Nature Ambassador Series Farm Walk\n\nSept 21 – Farming for the Head\, Heart and the Pocket – Regenerative Systems for Sustainable Farming\n\nThe Farming for Nature farm walks are an opportunity for our Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land.\n\nJames Gilmartin is a 7th generation farmer\, who farms alongside his father in North County Leitrim. James takes a wonderfully holistic approach to his farm\, recognising and valuing its importance from an environmental\, a productivity and a social/cultural point of view. James runs a mixed organic farm. He keeps a suckler herd and a small herd of Dexters\, as well as a small flock of sheep. Part of the farm is commonage and a very important HNV habitat for various flora and fauna species\, including the endangered Marsh Fritillary butterfly.\n\nMuch of the grassland is species-rich permanent pasture. James recognises the nature value of his farm and manages the land with this in mind – “As a farmer\, the natural world is your office!” He doesn’t want to push the land beyond its natural capability\, thus low stocking density\, low external inputs and extensive management of the land are crucial elements of his farming system. With a keen interest in regenerative agriculture\, James has been trialling holistic planned grazing on the farm for the past year. Through the NPWS Farm Plan Scheme\, James is just one of three farmers currently trialling NoFence cattle collars to deliver targeted grazing in an upland setting. He has installed PV panels on the shed roof. There is a small pond on the farm and James enjoys planting trees and hedges on the farm every year. He keeps a small number of bees on the farm as well.\n\nSaturday\, September 21 at 11am\n\nTickets costs €10.  Limited places available.  Book your place here\n\nThese events have been jointly supported by the Department of Agriculture\, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

SUMMARY:FFN Farm walk- A productive mixed-stock farm working with nature
DESCRIPTION:Farm walk & practical actions for nature with Farming for Nature Ambassador Pen Saugnier. \n\n\n\n ‘A productive mixed-stock farm working with nature’.  \n\n\n\nThe Farming for Nature (FFN) farm walks are an opportunity for FFN Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPen Saugnier farms near Mullingar County Westmeath where she manages a mixed organic farm with the help of her family. Her mother Diana Pickersgill bought the land in 1993 and immediately converted to organic. She planted 40 acres with a diverse multispecies sward. 5.8ha of land was planted with mixed broadleaf woodland and another 2.4ha of mixed broadleaf woodland was planted in 2018. The woodland is managed by a continuous cover system and Diana’s son looks after this aspect of the farm. As advocates for the importance of maintaining diversity on farms\, they keep a variety of stock on the land but maintains low stocking numbers. They buy in Dexter cattle and finishes them on the farm. They keep a flock of about 31 breeding ewes\, selling organic lamb to Irish Country Meats and direct to local customers. Two sows are kept on the land\, along with donkeys and chickens. Silage or hay is cut every year. External inputs on the farm consist of small amounts of organic concentrates for some of the animals during the winter. Some oats are grown on the farm every year to help supplement winter feeding and to provide straw for winter bedding. The farm is quite self-sufficient\, and the family grow vegetables for the house as well.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Pickersgills takes pride in running a productive farm\, all the while protecting and enhancing biodiversity on the land. Habitats include woodlands\, hedgerows\, wetland areas with 2 ponds\, and orchard\, meadows and wildflower areas. Subsequently there is plenty of wildlife on the farm including long eared owls\, buzzards\, pheasants\, snipe\, woodcock\, hawks\, red squirrel and lots of insects – “Last year we counted 35 different bird species before March.”

SUMMARY:Summer Seed Saving with Madeline McKeever
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intensive\, hands-on day of how and why saving seed is important. \nLed by internationally renowned seed saver Madeline McKeever of Brown Envelope Seeds\, the course will be delivered across a number of great locations – the Farm Classroom at the Ballymaloe Cookery School\, our main glasshouse and the vegetable\, fruit and wild flower fields where a wide variety of vegetables\, fruit and herbs are grown organically each season. Madeline will lead a discussion in her inimitable style on seed security and sovereignty before demonstrating the practical instructions for saving seed of cereals\, herbs and vegetables. Then it’s your turn with Madeline and members of the farm and garden team on hand to answer any questions you might have. You’ll also have a guided tour of the farm and gardens where we’ll identify the different crops and plants going to seed. \nMadeline McKeever grew up on a farm in Co Meath\, studied botany in TCD\, completing a MSc in vegetation history in 1984. After some time travelling\, and a year long apprenticeship on an organic farm in Maine\, she returned to Ireland in 1986 to farm in West Cork. The farm in Ardagh was managed as an organic dairy farm from 1987-1999\, after which beef cattle and seeds became the main focus. SUMMARY:FFN - Ecological Diversity on a 145-acre Market Garden\, Orchard and Beef Farm
DESCRIPTION:Farming for Nature Ambassador Series Farm Walk \nAugust 17 – Ecological Diversity on a 145-acre Market Garden\, Orchard and Beef Farm \nThe Farming for Nature farm walks are an opportunity for our Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. \nPatrick Frankel runs Kilbrack Organic Farm with his partner Judith and their young family. This is a 145-acre farm in Doneraile\, Co. Cork. His main focus is a wide a range of organic vegetables with 45 crops throughout the seasons\, that he sales directly to consumers and supplies 26 restaurants in Cork city and the surrounding areas. He also has shorthorn cattle which he sells at 30-months\, and a beech and oak woodland. Patrick has a deep interest in biodiversity\, soil heath and sustainable food production. He grows in a walled garden combining an orchard with potatoes and a wide range of vegetables including leeks\, kale\, garlic\, Jerusalem artichokes\, potatoes\, tomatoes\, french beans and salad leaves. He has 4 polytunnels that specialise in overwinter salads\, and summer crops such as peppers\, tomatoes and aubergines. The diversity in produce at Kilbrack is outstanding while enhancing the diversity in the surrounding agroecological system. “I am amazed by what can come off relatively small piece of land. What it gives back over and over if you look after it. The market is not filled\, there is so much demand for organics\, there is so much opportunity here without importing. I have faith in farmers that they will adapt to our changing climate as they are in touch with elements and will react.” Patrick and Judith are keen on educating others on market gardening with up to 50 Woofers each year coming to the farm. \nSaturday\, 17 August at 11am \nTickets costs €10.  Limited places available.  Book your place here \nThese events have been jointly supported by the Department of Agriculture\, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

SUMMARY:FFN - Produced in Roscommon\, Sold in Roscommon – Organic Mixed Farming & Supplying your own Restaurant Chain
DESCRIPTION:Farming for Nature Ambassador Series Farm Walk \nAugust 10 – Produced in Roscommon\, Sold in Roscommon – Organic Mixed Farming & Supplying your own Restaurant Chain \nThe Farming for Nature farm walks are an opportunity for our Ambassadors to showcase their contribution to nature and good farming practices on their land. \nLiam and Justina Gavin run Drumanilra Organic Farm on the shores of Lough Key\, Co. Roscommon. \nLiam and Justina manage a 300-acre mixed livestock and horticulture farm. They farm a pedigree herd of Irish Dexter cattle\, a flock of Jacob sheep\, out-door reared pigs and a flock of laying hens. The organic animal produce is processed locally and sold direct to their customers via their farm shop/cafeor through a box-scheme. The market garden produces organic salads and vegetables which are also sold direct to local customers. \nMost of the land is in permanent pasture and they are experimenting with multi-species herbal leys to help regenerate soil and provide nutritionally dense food for the animals. On the farm they have implemented a Holistic Planned Grazing system meaning the animals are moved to fresh pasture daily. During the winter months\, some of the animals are housed in dry-bay sheds and the farmyard manure generated is spread as organic fertilizer on the land. \nThere are pockets of mature broadleaf forestry around the farm\, as well nature corridors and diverse hedgerows that are managed for biodiversity. Given its proximity to the lake\, this wetland habitat attracts lots of water birds to the land. Other wildlife seen on the farm includes deer\, red squirrel\, badgers\, pine marten\, rabbits and hares\, as well as birds of prey like buzzards and kestrels. The Gavin family\, along with their team\, have created a diverse productive farm that operates with care and consideration for the natural landscape and ecology of the land \nSaturday\, August 10\, at 11am \nTickets costs €10.  Limited places available.  Book your place here \nThese events have been jointly supported by the Department of Agriculture\, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

SUMMARY:Irish Agroforestry Forum - Agroforestry Walk with Farming for Nature Ambassador Andrew Chilton
DESCRIPTION:Organic Agroforestry Walk with Andrew Chilton \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Chilton family has a mixed farming enterprise in Co Roscommon. Their careful management has turned what was once a field of rushes into a productive diverse farm holding. Over the years they have been planting different types of hedgerows\, field corners\, orchards\, a small woodland\, and standard trees on the land. They have a small herd of Dexter cattle and keep bees\, chickens\, and the occasional pig on the farm. They closely monitor the livestock carrying capacity of the land throughout the year and adjust the stocking rate accordingly. All of the livestock are on a rotational grazing system and overwinter outdoors. They also manage a second farm bordering Lough Key which is surrounded by woodland. They keep a herd of Alpacas on this farm. The fleeces from the Alpacas are being processed in the UK and turned into duvets and pillows. All products from the home farm are sold directly to customers.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisiting this farm will be an extraordinary learning experience\, showing firsthand how a close-to-nature farming approach can be valuable for the entire farm enterprise. Andrew advocates for diversity and has been a Farming for Nature ambassador since 2022. He is also an organic farm advisor and teaches the Organic Production Principles courses for National Organic SkillNet.
