SUMMARY:Information evening about the Old Irish Goats on Howth
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to an information evening about the Old Irish Goats on Howth on the 14th of November at 7 pm @ Howth Yacht Club.  \n Dubbed “the Goats That Fight Fire”\, Melissa Jeuken will share her perspective on this pioneering endeavour which reintroduced the Old Irish Goat to Howth Head after a hiatus of over half a century. To help with upland fire prevention and heathland grazing\, the project combined the brilliant browsing capacity of the Old Irish Goat with a virtual fencing system to target the highly flammable European Gorse. The project supports the conservation and breeding of Old Irish Goats\, with genetically informed breeding and genotype/phenotype analysis being an important aspect of the project. \n We are also offering a short tour of the fire breaks with the Old Irish Goats on active duty on Nov 14th from 11:30 to 13:30 p.m. and an afternoon walk from 14:30 to 16:30. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into this groundbreaking endeavour which concludes in August 2024. To book your place on the tour\, please let us know by email (melissa@oldirishgoat.ie) \nIf you have any colleagues who you feel might be interested in attending please feel free to share\, the tour can be booked by email\, the 7 p.m. update is an open public event.

SUMMARY:Ballymaloe Farm School: Protecting Farmland Pollinators and Improving Biodiversity
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Una Fitzpatrick (National Biodiversity Data Centre)\, Dr. Saorla Kavanagh (All Ireland Pollinator Plan) & Donal Sheehan (Bride Project) \nCourse Intro: \nThis course will give practical advice on how everyone can improve biodiversity whether they are farmers or non-farmers. It will outline the main drivers in biodiversity loss but also give solutions to halt the decline. \nAt the end of the course\, participants should be able to design an improvement plan for their own holding – whether large or small\, farm\, garden\, school\, public area or other. \nThis full day course is delivered by three subject matter experts with extensive experience of putting research into practice. \nÚna has worked as a Senior Ecologist within the National Biodiversity Data Centre since 2007. In 2015\, she co-founded the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan with Prof Jane Stout and is the Chair of the Steering Group. She manages the implementation of the Plan and other initiatives within the Data Centre\, including the national pollinator databases\, the All-Ireland Bumblebee Monitoring Scheme\, Flower-Insect Timed Counts\, the Rare Plant Monitoring Scheme and the National Vegetation Database. \nSaorla is Project Manager of the Protecting Farmland Pollinators project\, which seeks to test evidence-based actions to make farmland more pollinator friendly. \nDonal is a dairy farmer from Castlelyons in East Cork. He is also the Project Manager of the BRIDE Farming With Nature Project\, an innovative agri-environment project that takes a landscape-scale approach to biodiversity whereby groups of farmers in a given area are encouraged to implement a range of habitat improvement measures. \nMore info & booking here
